Understanding the damage
Small cosmetic chip with no pain. Usually repaired in a single appointment with dental bonding or a veneer.
Bonding or veneer
Superficial surface cracks in enamel only. Common, usually painless, and rarely require treatment beyond monitoring.
Monitoring; cosmetic bonding if desired
A piece of the chewing surface breaks away, often around a filling. Usually not painful unless the pulp is involved.
Crown; root canal if nerve exposed
A vertical crack that extends into the root. Can be difficult to see on X-ray; causes sharp pain when biting.
Crown; root canal; extraction if past gumline
The crack divides the tooth completely into segments. Immediate treatment required; saving the tooth may not be possible.
Root canal + crown, or extraction + replacement
A fracture beginning in the root and extending upward. Frequently requires extraction.
Usually extraction; implant consultation
Repair options
Best for: Small chips on front teeth
Tooth-colored composite resin is sculpted directly onto the tooth, shaped, and hardened in one visit.
Best for: Large fractures, weakened back teeth
A custom crown caps the entire tooth, restoring its strength and protecting against further splitting.
Best for: Cosmetic chips on front teeth
A thin porcelain shell bonds to the front surface, transforming appearance and sealing the fractured edge.
Best for: Fracture reaching the pulp
The nerve is treated, the infection resolved, then the tooth is capped with a crown for long-term function.
Best for: Tooth cannot be saved
We discuss implant, bridge, or partial denture options at the same appointment so you have a clear restoration plan.
Common questions
No. Unlike bone, tooth enamel has no regenerative capacity. A broken tooth will not heal and will typically worsen over time as bacteria enter the fracture and the crack propagates under chewing stress.
A small cosmetic chip can often wait a few days for a regular appointment. Any tooth that is painful, sensitive to temperature, or has a visible crack extending toward the gumline should be seen the same day.
A crown is one of the most versatile restorations for broken teeth, but it can only save a tooth if enough root structure remains and the fracture hasn't extended below the bone level. During your exam, we'll tell you honestly whether the tooth is saveable.
Bonding is excellent for cosmetic chips and small restorations but is less durable than a crown for large fractures or back teeth under significant biting force. We'll recommend the option that matches both your cosmetic and functional needs.
Most plans cover at least a portion of essential restorations (crowns, root canals). Purely cosmetic repairs (bonding, veneers) may not be covered. We'll verify your benefits before treatment.
