What Is a Dental Emergency?

If something is wrong with your teeth and it's causing pain, bleeding, or you can't wait until your next scheduled appointment — it's an emergency. Some of the most common situations we see:

Toothache or severe tooth pain

Tooth pain that doesn't go away on its own is almost always a sign of something that needs attention — infection, decay, a cracked tooth. The longer you wait, the worse it typically gets.

Broken or chipped tooth

A broken tooth can be sharp, painful, and at risk of further damage. We'll assess the extent of the break and determine whether it can be bonded, crowned, or if the tooth can be saved.

Lost crown or filling

A lost crown or filling leaves the underlying tooth exposed and vulnerable. Come in as soon as you can — we'll replace or re-cement it and protect the tooth.

Dental abscess

An abscess is a serious infection — swelling in the gums or jaw, severe pain, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth are all signs. This needs to be treated promptly. In some cases, a dental abscess can be a medical emergency.

Knocked-out tooth

Time matters. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), keep it moist — in milk or between your cheek and gum — and call us immediately. Same-day treatment gives the best chance of saving it.

Lost or broken orthodontic appliance

A broken wire or loose bracket may not be painful, but it can be disruptive. Call us and we'll advise on what to do until we can see you.

While You're Waiting to Be Seen

Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water. Over-the-counter pain relievers can reduce discomfort. Don't place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.

Broken tooth

Rinse your mouth gently. If there's bleeding, apply gentle pressure with gauze. Save any pieces of the tooth.

Knocked-out tooth

Handle by the crown only. Rinse gently without scrubbing. Keep moist — in milk, saline, or between your cheek and gum. Get here fast.

Abscess

Do not attempt to pop it. Rinse with warm salt water to reduce bacteria. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help. Call us immediately.

Lost crown

Keep the crown if possible. You can temporarily re-seat it with dental cement from a pharmacy. Avoid eating on that side.

Why Orlando Patients Call Us When Something Goes Wrong

We've been handling dental emergencies for patients across the Dr. Phillips and Orlando area since 1987. We know how to move quickly, how to keep anxious patients calm, and how to address the problem without making a difficult situation worse.

One of our patients came to us as an emergency when her daughter had a dental crisis. The experience was good enough that the entire family switched to us permanently. That's not something that happens at practices that don't take emergencies seriously.

If you're not a current patient, that's okay. Call us — we'll do our best to get you in.

In Their Words

What Patients Say About Our Emergency Care

My daughter had an emergency and Venetian Pointe took her in immediately. She liked the dentist, the assistants, and the atmosphere so much that we switched the entire family.

Dr. Palmer immediately put my mind at ease. They worked as a team to fix the problem — efficient and completely reassuring.

After We Handle the Immediate Problem

Emergency appointments address the immediate issue — pain relief, protecting the tooth, treating infection. In many cases, follow-up treatment is needed to fully restore the tooth. After your emergency visit we'll walk you through exactly what happened, what was done, and what comes next. Whether that's a crown, a root canal, an implant, or nothing more — you'll leave with a clear plan.
